Hello Everybody,
This week was pretty good. Especially the weekend. On Saturday, for our workout time we go and play basketball with the ward so that was great. Then the young mens president was moving so we went and helped out with that and then we went back to our apartment to get freshened up and do our study time but we saw a couple of guys that were moving into our complex so we offered our help in unloading the U-haul (once we saw that they didn't have much furniture and that they live on the ground floor) They seem like pretty cool guys though. While handing stuff to us we got to know them pretty well. They had a huge crate filled with Dungeons&Dragons manuals which my companion used to play and so he talked to one of them a bit about that. And then they also had a bunch of rock climbing equipment and some old fencing gear and snowboarding stuff. I think one of them is a math teacher and the others occupation I would guess as a hippie. Our ward just so happened to be hosting a softball/BBQ party later that day so we invited these two guys to it but they didn't come.
Instead we walked with our investigators to the ward event and our investigators had a great time. Free hot dogs and watermelon I think appeals to just about everyone. My companion and I even got to play a little softball. I think I scored one run but my other hits were all fly balls easily picked off by the five year old boy playing short stop. I pitched a bit as well and it was near the end of the evening when all the ladies were finally coaxed up to bat and perhaps I made the pitches too easy cause they filled up the bases and then started scoring runs on us. I picked up a bunted ball and got a runner out though. At one point I retrieved a way foul ball that went over a fence and I threw it back towards an out fielder who I though was expecting my throw but she wasn't and so cowered up protecting her face when people told her "heads up" and it bounced off her back. I felt really bad but I don't think it did any damage. She was nice about it. Her son is the one we always take with us to appointments cause he's about to go on his mission. Later I was standing around and I heard him call out, "You hurt my Mom!?" It was all in good fun and the BBQ was a big hit. Although we had dinner with the former relief society president last night and she hadn't realized that our investigators were our investigators and was talking about how a couple of strangers came and helped themselves to the food and festivities.
My companion will be leaving tomorrow and I'll get another. He has been here his whole mission so far and all the ward members were very sad to say goodbye to him on Sunday. He truly is adored in this ward. I'll be surprised if a few members don't try and follow him to his next area and start up a Church of Elder Orgill. It's good to have such a connection with the members, hopefully my next companion and I will be okay substitutes.
After church we had a lesson with a man who is progressing extraordinarily well. We weren't expecting him to be able to come to church until November cause he said his work schedule doesn't change until then but he traded shifts with some of his co workers and he promised to be at church the next two weeks so that will be amazing. Then we had two dinners. Our ward mission leader was signed up on the dinner calendar so we went and had the biggest pizza I've ever partaken of. Like 3 feet in diameter just about. And then we had a lesson scheduled with, as I mentioned above, the former relief society president and her family and she just assumed we would join for dinner too so we didn't quiet that notion. We had lasanga and it was good. We were there to teach her non-member husband. Started off kind of rocky cause the first thing I said to the man as I entered the back yard and saw him working at the base of his giant tomato plants was, "Are they overgrown?" I guess he is very proud of the size of his tomato plants and all the work he put into them and so my question was a little unwelcome. But in all reality he must have recognized that the fact that he has no ripe tomatos by the end of August means his plants are off in some way, so really I guess I was adding salt to the wound. But it was all good. He is a really nice man and just enjoyed ribbing me because of my mis-step.
That's about all with me. Hope everyone is doing great.
Sincerely, Elder Miller

Hello everyone,
This week went by pretty fast seemingly. On Monday of last week all the missionaries in our zone got together to play sports which hasn't been done for a while so it was a big deal. About the time I started my mission our former mission president banned missionary get togethers on preparation days because he felt we could be baptizing more people. The reinstitution of permitting us to play sports together on preparation days I guess would be a reward were we to fulfill the mission goals. Anyway, our new mission president is a bit more soft hearted, for now. So we got together and played rugby and basketball and then at the stake center couldn't resist posing for some photos with the wooden handcarts that were back from the recent youth trek. It was a fun day.
On Tuesday we taught a less active lady that we have been working with. She is the sweetest lady and insists on feeding us everytime we come over. As soon as we finish the lesson she jumps up and tells us that she has already prepared some sandwhiches or hot dogs or has some cake and yogurt and bananas. She is super nice. She takes care of her mother who has alzheimers though so that often stresses her out and prevents her from making it to church cause she has to take her mother to her own church often. But yesterday she was at church and brought her mother along with her. Her mother is super friendly and always complimenting peoples smiles and you always feel really good when you are around those two. They are really funny.
Then on Wednesday we had an appointment with a couple of guys who rent rooms out of this house nearby where we live. One of them has already come to church twice but he was sick so we taught the other the plan of salvation and it went okay. He has agreed to being baptized sort of but admitted that he's holding himself back. We basically told him to not do that and invited him to really read the Book of Mormon and figure out what he really wants from life.
Oh, earlier on Wednesday, how could I forget? We had to get up early to drive to the mission office because Elder Gavarret of the first quorum of the seventy was touring the mission and was addressing four zones that day. It was good. Sometimes they feed us but this wasn't one of those times. Elder Gavarret mainly spoke using stories from the new testament to highlight faith and it's importance in missionary work along with relying on the Holy Ghost. Frankly I had a hard time understanding him fully because of his Peruvian accent but the meeting was good. Those gatherings are always fun cause you can briefly catch up with old companions and where they are serving now and how the old wards area doing. Plus most importantly, I grabbed a spatula from the mission supply closet, so my pancake making times are back in business. President Watkins also initiated a shirt/tie exchange. He had a bunch of new white shirts and ties and told us all to trade in ties and shirts for new ones. I like all my ties so I didn't trade any and I didn't really like the new ties. All pretty bland if you ask me. Ties are pretty much our only form of fashion expression and I'm not about to trade away my personality.
Anyway, yesterday was a busy day. Church took up much of it. But then we had to rush to dinner and devour some pretty good tacos that some members made us. And then rush back to our apartment to be picked up by one of our investigators who agreed to give us a ride to the missionary outgoing fireside. I really wanted to go cause my very first companion who trained me is going home and so at the fireside you get to hear from all of the people finishing their missions and then chat with them afterward. In order to attend you have to get an investigator to come along with you though. It was a risky situation. We had accidentally scheduled an appointment with our investigator during the outgoing fireside so I had to call him and invite him to the fireside in place of the lesson. I think he's kind of eager to show his willingness to join the church and do what we say so it all worked out and he took us. I tried to invite him so as to not seem like we were taking advantage of him though. I'm not sure if he actually enjoyed it as much as he said he did but all that matters is that I was able to say good bye to my trainer and get some pictures with him. Plus some members from my first area were there so it was great to see them again. My companion chatted with the presidents assistant and he got the impression that he'll definitely be transferred next week so I'll be on to having my 7th companion.
Those are my week highlights I guess. This Saturday our ward is having a picnic baseball party so we are going to invite as many non members as possible so we'll have an excuse to go ourselves. Hopefully members bring their friends and stuff too so it should be a good turn out.
Have a wonderful week everyone.

Hello Everybody,
This week has been really good. It seems like missionary work is subject to high and low tides concerning how many people we have to work with and things to do and it seems like we are experiencing a bit of a high tide which is fantastic. We were recently challenged to contact way more people on the street or where ever through out the day aside from our normal activities and it is paying off. Not directly though. We have been getting a slew of referrals from other missionaries and the mission office or church headquarters. So we have a new investigator that I mentioned last time who says that he is a Fundamentalist Christian/Roman Catholic but basically has the standpoint that all churches as long as they believe in Christ are the true church. That's the problem with some of our different terms within the church, at least as far as missionary work goes. Either my companion or I probably said "The True Church" and now our investigator thinks that we hate on all other churches. So now every time we see him he makes sure he lets us know that he loves all churches. We'll just have to re-emphasize authority and priesthood and hope he starts to understand our view a little better.
There is also this lady in the spanish ward who has a friend from AA that we are teaching and he already has a very full understanding of just about all aspects of religion so he can clue into what it is that we are talking about right away and understands it all without much thought cause in one form or another he's already heard it all before. I think he wants to be baptized but he recognizes that we kind of have an order in the way that we go about baptizing people so in a way it feels like he's holding out. He doesn't want to seem too eager but I think he really wants to be baptized. He just can't come to church yet because of his work but he should be in the clear by November and we'll see what happens then. He's like the most reliable investigator that I've ever had. He really wants to hear what we have to say and is always anticipating us when we come over for appointments and he doesn't forget. It's kind of a strange thing, usually my investigators in the past have been a little grudging in the way they meet with us.
Then the crazy man who we helped move into the area accepted our invitation to have the lessons from us but he wasn't sure what time he'd be able to make for us. So he's not fully committed to hearing us out but he is dealing with a lot with his move and trying to find a job and things of that nature but hopefully it all settles down and we'll be able to meet with him.
The family that I was initially excited about when I was first in this area got back from their vacation to Hawaii and we caught up with them last night and sort of set up a time to teach them again. They are practically the flakiest people on earth but are super nice and agreeable. I'm not sure how soon progress will really be made with them but we'll keep cracking at it.
Well that's most of what we have going on in a nutshell. We have this super stellar lady in our ward who we just wanted to try and find out if she knew any of the less active names that we have on a big old list but she ended up not knowing a lot of them and so took it upon herself to seek these people out and find out who they are. She went through like 25 people in two days and asked them questions and got to know some of them and a few of them she even determined for us are possible homes that could use some missionary influence. It was awesome. Her and her husband are planning on going on a mission soon and they are going to be amazing. That's about it. Hope everyone has a fantastic week.

Hello Everyone,
Let's see, this past week was great. One highlight is that we got a new investigator to come to church which was good. He is very easy going and had no problem accepting our invitation to come, in fact I think he propositioned the idea before we could spit it out. He naturally holds more to his old faith and he introduced himself to many of the members as a Christian Fundamentalist/Roman Catholic which is an odd religious stance but we take who we can get. He was going to come last week but didn't answer the door when we went there to get a ride for him. Later he said that he slept in, and then even later he said he was sick so we aren't sure if it's a combination of both or if he was lying and couldn't keep his stories straight. Either way, he came to church this past Sunday and was actually crying during Fast and Testimony meeting. We hope that he was just feeling the spirit really strong and not that he was upset over our sunday services. He actually told us that he wasn't feeling well after that though and we got him a ride home before sunday school. But he remembered to remind us that we had scheduled a meeting with him on Wednesday so that was good and a sign that he still likes us. Actually today we got a referral from the the mission office saying that someone from the same address that this guy lives at requested a book of mormon. Our investigator lives in a government funded home I think so one of the other room renters I guess intercepted one the pass along cards that we left for our investigator and requested a copy of the book of mormon. This specific residence may prove pretty open to our message.
And then we had a member call us to say that her friend was interested in learning more last sunday and we taught him again this sunday. The situation is a little odd to me. The member is a lady that attends the spanish ward cause she served a mission to Argentina and is holding onto her spanish I guess. But her boyfriend doesn't even live in our area yet he plans on moving at some point so we are just taking him as ours cuase the fellowship is in our area. The guy works on sundays until November when his shift changes hopefully so maybe he'll come to church then. The man is very verbose and can just go on and on and on concerning his religious past and his understanding of principles. He has pretty much surmised on his own everything that we believe and the rest he is very open to accepting. On some level I feel that he is perhaps only taking the discussions cause the member he is dating is very outspoken and perhaps they have plans to get married and she has probably told him not unless he is a member and they can go through the temple eventually. Not that that is a bad thing, but if the investigator is just going along with everything we say just so he can pass the test but in the back of his head he's disagreeing with some things then that is not ideal to the conversion process. We'll learn more as we continue to meet with him though and hopefully my skepticism on the matter is without cause. Those are the two main additions to our teaching activity along with some regulars we have that aren't really going anywhere.
My companion is really anxious to baptize someone before he gets transferred out of here but I'm not sure if it will happen. There are only so many weeks left that our only options are current investigators who have already attended church a number of times. We'll see what happens when the family that we have been teaching returns from their vacation to Hawaii. They may have visited my companions family and my companion keeps joking that perhaps his Dad will convert the family for us. That would be cool.
That's about all that I have for this week.
Hope everyone is having fun.

Hello Everyone,
This past week went by real fast. Mainly due to the busy end to the week that we had. Friday contained an odd surprise as we were invited by our Bishop out to breakfast cause he said that there was a waitress who he had spoken to before who was interested in joining the church. So we went to this little breakfast place and ate outside as a tree with millions of little flowers dropped them on us and in our food. The place was surprisingly busy for a Friday morning so the waitress didn't have time to sit and make small talk with us and allow us to invite her to church or anything but the free meal from our bishop was still pleasant and perhaps we'll be able to talk to the waitress some other time. Then in the afternoon we were asked to attend a blood drive at our stake center that was going to be inter-faith organized. So we were supposed to show up and answer questions if anyone had any, plus my companion and I were both pretty excited at the prospect at donating ourselves if we could. But we got the building and were disappointed to find that no one was there and there was sign saying it had been cancelled.
On Saturday we were informed that a man who isn't a member of the church was moving into the ward boundaries and his family were members and so called and set up for us to help him and our bishop had communicated with the man and he seemed interested in coming to church as well. So we helped with the move and invited the man to a BBQ that one of our ward missionaries was putting on for just the purpose of inviting non-members to. The BBQ's turn out wasn't very good and the man didn't come but he did call us in the middle of it and asked for our help with a crisis that had occurred. His wife was supposed to drive and pick him up and take him back to their old home to continue packing some stuff but she was injured an didn't come to get him. We couldn't do much for him but our Bishop in the end helped him out I think. Not that we really hold him indebted to the ward or anything but we feel that he has relied on us enough that hopefully he will consent to coming to church and listening to the missionary lessons.
Then on Sunday we were invited to do sharing time in primary cause it was the fifth sunday, and we had a couple of activities and weren't sure if we had enough planned to take up 20 minutes though. But when we got to actually doing the sharing time I don't think the primary left us even 15 minutes worth of time and so we went kind of long on each activity and were cut short by the bell. It wasn't that bad of an experience but I'm glad that the next fifth sunday isn't probably until I'll be out of this area.
We received a referral from some other missionaries and met the guy and he was super nice and had no qualms accepting our invitation to church but needed a ride so we got our ward mission leader to go with us to pick him up and he wasn't there or at least the cleaning lady lied or something. It was really disappointing. We went back by after church cause he had also told us we could teach him then and he said that he had slept in accidentally and that he would come to church next week and we could teach him then. I'm not sure how reliable he is but perhaps he'll come along.
So those were some hightlights of my week. For the primary lesson acutally it was on temples and so my companion and I thought we'd make a big ole' sugar cube temple but it turned out to be kind of hard after we had used up one of our 4 boxes of sugar cubes. And we didn't quite know how to cement the cubes together so our structure would hold. We abandoned the project but I made some Kool Aid so the sugar won't go to waste.
I hope everyone has a great week.
Sincerely, Elder Miller
